Harbourside past, present and future

Once a wealthy and bustling port, Bristol’s Harbouside suffered significant decline during the last half of the twentieth century as modern shipping moved to the Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks on the outskirts of the city.

Although dormant for many years, the area has been transformed and is once again a working harbour, with pleasure craft and a ferry service that has become a vital part of Bristol life.

Echoes of the Harbourside’s rich and varied history remain in the industrial cranes and converted warehouses which line the waterfront, but these now sit alongside modern architecture, innovative bridges and stunning public squares. As well as cultural facilities and a wealth of bars and restaurants, the area is home to major companies such as HBOS and Lloyds TSB. It also represents the heart of Bristol’s flourishing creative industries.

The regeneration continues to breathe renewed life into the Harbourside, with a number of exciting developments set to further revive this spectacular quarter of the city.
