The flagship Museum of Bristol is currently under construction on the site of the former Industrial Museum on Princes Wharf and is due to open in 2011. It will form a world-class centre dedicated to the history of the city and its people, incorporating documents, pictures and working exhibits such as historic boats, cranes and trains. Personal memories and stories from those who have lived and worked in the Bristol will bring history to life and show how the city has changed over time.
The £25 million project has been made possible due to a £11.3 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant, as well as generous support from Bristol City Council, Renaissance South West and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.
The Museum's site, including the 1950s transit sheds and quayside, forms one of the last remaining complete 20th Century docksides in the UK. It will be sympathetically renovated, with the historic character preserved for future generations to enjoy. A stunning glass rooftop gallery will be added to create additional exhibition space.
